During the extended five-day Holiday weekend period beginning on July 3, a record-breaking number of travelers were observed, even from pre-pandemic years. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency investigated a total of nine traffic fatalities and three non-boating drownings during this period.
In Calhoun, Conecuh, Crenshaw, Cullman, Escambia, Jackson, Marshall, and Tuscaloosa counties, traffic fatalities were reported, and unfortunately, July 3 was the only day with no fatalities.
Out of the total fatalities, six individuals were drivers, one was a passenger, and two were motorcyclists. It is commendable that both motorcyclists were wearing helmets during the crash, but unfortunately, only one out of the seven other victims had their seatbelt fastened at the time of the accident.
Three people lost their lives due to drowning incidents at different locations in Alabama. The first incident took place at Oak Mountain State Park in Shelby, followed by another one at Wheeler Lake in Morgan, and the third one at Palmetto Creek in Baldwin.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the loved ones of the 12 individuals who tragically lost their lives during this holiday period. This number serves as a stark reminder that law enforcement’s job is never done,” stated ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor. He commended the state’s first responders and officers for their tireless work away from their families during the holiday. Additionally, he pledged to the public that their agency would continue to carry out their mission of protecting and serving by organizing high-visibility enforcement details and providing educational opportunities to counter dangerous driving and boating behaviors and ultimately reduce such tragedies.”
