Did you know that the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) recently arrested a known gang member for carrying marijuana? Sorry, I got ahead of myself; let me clarify. Texas DPS caught a verified Valluco gang member for attempting to carry more than 100 pounds of marijuana.

Texas DPS Drug Bust

This Article Includes

  • 1 Texas DPS Drug Bust
  • 2 Other Drug-Related Arrests Along Texas-Mexico Border

On Wednesday, May 28, a DPS agent was dispatched to the border station in Weslaco, TX, to assist a man who was detained after 118 pounds of marijuana was discovered in the back of his GMC Sierra.

Daniel Brandon Sayas-Carrasco, 23, has been charged with felony possession of marijuana, but the story gets better. Sayas-Carrasco is a known Valluco gang member.

Little is known about this group, but it is widely suspected that “Valluco” hails from the Rio Grande Valley. It is one of seven known Mexican-based gang organizations in Texas.

The Vallucos are part of a larger criminal organization known as “Tangos” or “Puro Tangos,” which operates in many sects throughout Texas and is primarily made up of jailed Hispanic criminals.

Other Drug-Related Arrests Along Texas-Mexico Border

This was not even the most recent narcotics bust along the border. In reality, on June 3, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) intercepted 363 pounds of cocaine at the Laredo port of entry. The estimated street value of such a haul is $4.8 million.

Then, only one day earlier, CBP seized more than 40 pounds of the white powder from a 21-year-old guy at the Ysleta Port of Entry. Certainly less than 363 pounds, but it highlights the fact that this is what border agents face almost every day.
