A woman who was abducted from a hospital as a newborn has passed away at the age of 30.
In 1994, Abbie Humphries, just three hours old, was taken by a woman posing as a nurse from the maternity ward at Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham. She was found 16 days later after a nationwide search.
Abbie’s husband, Karl Sundgren, shared on social media that she died peacefully on Sunday, four years after being diagnosed with grade four brain cancer. The two were married in 2017.
Abbie reportedly didn’t learn of her abduction until she was 10 years old, when she found press clippings after moving to a new house.
Police had received a tip-off that Julie Kelley, a former dental nurse aged 22 at the time, had been pregnant and told others she was expecting a boy, but returned home with a baby girl. Abbie was found in a house in Wollaton, Nottingham, and was reunited with her parents, Roger and Karen Humphries.
Kelley pleaded guilty to the abduction and was sentenced to three years probation while receiving treatment for a personality disorder.
Abbie’s family moved to New Zealand during her childhood.
In November 2020, doctors discovered a 5cm brain tumor after Abbie began experiencing headaches following the death of her mother from breast cancer. Despite the diagnosis, she remained positive and shared with the Mail on Sunday, “There is no point feeling angry or blaming anything. We have just had a terrible amount of bad luck. I usually choose to look at the positive side of everything. It makes everyone feel better.”
In his post following her death, Sundgren wrote, “Our beautiful Abbie peacefully passed away yesterday, surrounded by loved ones. She fought so hard with so much strength and grace for over four years and can finally rest.”
A celebration of her life will be held in Whenuapai, Auckland, on Saturday.
