First responders initially responded to a call at the house when Dinora’s daughter, Eva, called for an ambulance for her mother. However, they faced difficulty in separating Dinora from the mattress. According to Local Fox affiliate WXFT, despite Eva receiving a significant amount of money, up to $140,000, for supposedly taking care of her mother, Dinora’s diabetes remained completely unmonitored. Moreover, she was left alone for weeks, resulting in insects infesting her skin-encrusted bed.

According to a press release from the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office, officials were required to transfer her and the mattress to the hospital in order to separate her from the bed.

A week prior to the 911 call, Hamilton, a registered nurse, stated during a visit that the woman appeared to be in good condition. Prosecutors mentioned that she was “clean, well cared for, alert, and managing her diabetes effectively.” However, they noted that Hamilton did not mention any issues such as pressure ulcers, faeces, bedbugs, or cockroaches. This information was reported by the Mirror US.

Eva Cardoso, the daughter of the elderly woman, had been working as Dinora Cardoso’s personal care attendant (PCA). Kayla Cardoso, the granddaughter of the victim and niece of Eva Cardoso, was responsible for serving as the elder Cardoso’s health care proxy and PCA Program Surrogate.

The women are not only accused of events that led to Dinora’s death but also of fraud. They supposedly billed MassHealth for services that were never provided, including services that were supposedly given while Dinora was in the hospital as an inpatient.

In addition to that, prosecutors have found evidence of them billing for services even after Eva Cardoso’s passing. Moreover, bank records indicate that Eva Cardoso would often allocate a portion of her PCA cheque to Kayla Cardoso.

MassHealth paid Eva Cardoso more than $140,000 to provide PCA care for Dinora Cardoso. According to officials, Hamilton’s report contradicted EMT and hospital records which clearly indicated that Dinora Cardoso had uncontrolled diabetes and that the level of insect infestation she had suffered would have taken several weeks to accumulate.

The defendants are scheduled to make their court appearance on January 15th.
