Lakeshia Johnson’s family has been going through a difficult time this year after her sudden and unexpected passing in May.
Seven children under the age of 18 were left behind by her.
Her mother and sister, who resided in a two-bedroom house without heating or air conditioning, graciously welcomed the children into their home.
The family sought assistance, and the community rallied to support them.
David Barranco, the owner of Chappy’s Deli, generously wrote a check to assist the family in relocating to a larger and more comfortable residence.
A Better Montgomery, a local organization, organized a GoFundMe campaign with a goal of $5,000 to furnish the home and create an unforgettable Christmas for the family. To their surprise, the campaign raised more than double the initial goal amount.
Charles Lee, the founder of the local non-profit organization That’s My Child, expressed his amazement at how Montgomery comes together. Despite the negative talk about the city, Lee believes that the community outreach event has been absolutely amazing.
Lakeshia’s mother and sister were in for a pleasant surprise when they were given a tour of the beautifully furnished house. Not only did they witness an abundance of gifts from generous donations, but they were also presented with an unexpected gift – a brand new van. The local dealership, Jack Ingram Motors, had graciously donated the vehicle.
“I was on the verge of fainting,” chuckled Kirsten, Lakeshia’s sister. “Now I don’t have to worry about paying for an Uber or Lyft. The kids won’t have to endure the cold while walking to and from school anymore.”
The Johnson family will always remember this Christmas as a season of giving.
