Governor Greg Abbott activated state emergency response resources to ensure preparedness for potential disasters as powerful storms swept through Texas on Thursday. Abbott directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to ensure that state agencies are prepared to swiftly respond to severe weather conditions, including high winds, hail, and tornado threats, impacting the Houston area and other parts of the state.
The Texas Department of State Health Services had made preparations to assist emergency operations, while Texas A&M Task Force 1, a highly trained rescue team, was put on standby for water and land rescues. Governor Abbott expressed the state’s readiness to utilize all necessary resources in order to support local officials in responding to severe weather threats. He also urged both citizens and visitors to exercise caution during holiday travel.
Wharton County officials reported the sighting of at least one confirmed tornado, possibly three, when a severe storm line passed through around 2 p.m. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported as of mid-afternoon. The Houston area remained under a Tornado Watch until 7 p.m., with citizens advised to stay updated on weather reports.
Abbott praised the commitment of emergency responders during the holiday week and stressed the importance of creating emergency preparations and following the advice of local officials. It is evident that Texans are dedicated to protecting their people in challenging situations, as they prepare for more storms.
