Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, there has been a significant surge in the demand for boat rentals at Geist Reservoir. These photos captured by Jonathan Matthes depict the increased interest in boating activities amongst individuals seeking outdoor recreational opportunities during these challenging times.

During a sudden storm that featured strong winds, rain, thunder, and lightning, several sailboats overturned on Geist Reservoir on July 14. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries.

The Fishers Fire Department reported that they carried out search and rescue operations at the reservoir with the help of first responder boats 392, 391, and 391B. The Department received assistance from the Indianapolis Fire Department and the Department of Natural Resources. The team successfully made multiple surface rescues during the operation.

During the storm, FFD reported that there were 12 boats on the water, with a total of 24 individuals on board.

The FFD confirmed that no injuries were reported and all individuals were accounted for.

In an email, Jim Jordan, a member of the Indianapolis Sailing Club, reported hearing about a sailboat capsizing on Geist. However, he did not provide any specific information about the boat involved.

According to him, it is common for smaller racing boats to overturn in the face of strong winds.

According to him, during races, they ensure that there are always two safety boats present on the water to provide necessary assistance to sailors who might require help. In most cases, the crew is capable of uprighting the boat and removing excess water from it.
