A Kansas City man led police on a high-speed chase before colliding with them on Saturday, leading to his arrest in Platte County.

On August 10, at around 1 a.m., a 2017 Dodge Challenger merged into southbound I-29 near Tiffany Springs Parkway at over 90 mph.

A Platte County sheriff’s officer attempted to stop the Dodge, but it continued to drive faster and began a chase. As the Dodge proceeded to drive down I-29, the deputy lost sight of it and ended the pursuit by turning off his emergency equipment.

A few minutes later, a crash on NW 72nd Street, directly off I-29, drew the attention of another deputy. The deputy discovered that the same Dodge had crashed and was on fire.

Both the driver and the passenger remained at the site. A nearby hospital received “more moderate injuries” from the passenger.

The driver, Christopher Fry, 23, of Kansas City, Missouri, suffered minor injuries, according to court filings. After receiving treatment and receiving medical clearance at the hospital, authorities brought Fry to the Platte County jail and charged him:

    • Resisting arrest/detention/stop by fleeting- creating a substantial risk
    • Operating a motor vehicle in a careless and imprudent manner, involving an accident

According to the probable cause statement, Fry achieved speeds of up to 134 mph while avoiding the Platte County deputy.

Fry entered a plea of not guilty during his arraignment on Monday, Aug. 12. His next court appearance will be for a bond review hearing on Aug. 20. Presently, he is in custody with a bond set at $8,500.
