HOUSTON — A woman has been charged with first-degree arson in connection with a deadly warehouse fire that claimed the life of veteran Houston firefighter Marcelo “Ox” Garcia III. The Houston Fire Department announced the arrest of Yesenia Mendez, 38, who authorities say intentionally set the blaze at a warehouse on Supply Row.
Firefighter Garcia, a 10-year member of the department known for his bravery and positivity, was killed when a wall collapsed during his efforts to contain the fire. Another firefighter was also injured in the incident. Garcia, who had served six years at Station 23, is remembered as a dedicated member of the force and a positive presence in the community.
The Houston Professional Firefighters Association expressed grief and outrage in a statement, noting, “We are heartbroken and angry to learn that the fire that took the life of one of our own was a deliberate act of arson. The loss has deeply affected our firefighter family, and while we are relieved an arrest has been made, nothing can truly bring solace to those who knew and loved our fallen brother.”
Court records reveal that Mendez has a lengthy criminal history, including multiple charges for theft, drug possession, and assault. Most recently, she faced a charge of assault causing bodily injury in 2021. She now faces arson charges related to the fire, which caused “bodily injury or death.”
In honor of Garcia’s service and sacrifice, the City of Houston has lit City Hall in red. Funeral arrangements are underway as the community continues to mourn the tragic loss of one of their own.
