On Sunday, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which the National Weather Service uses to provide official readings for the city, received a daily record of 0.24 inches.
The previous June 1 record of 0.02 inches was achieved in 1914, according to NWS data posted on X.
According to the Maricopa County Flood Control District, Phoenix at Sky Harbor received 0.20 inches of rain about 7 p.m., while Interstate 17 near Grand Canyon University received 0.28 inches and central Mesa received 0.16.
The airport had not seen measurable rain since April 18. Prior to that, Phoenix had not seen rain since March 15.
Following light rains Sunday morning, widespread rainfall was forecast to fall across the valley late Sunday and early Monday.
The Phoenix National Weather Service reported a few isolated showers throughout Pinal County, including near Casa Grande and along I-10.
Parts of the east and northeast Valley also received 0.04 inches earlier Sunday, with isolated storms producing thunder.
“For this time of the year, we basically almost never really get much of a weather system like this,” Alex Young of NWS in Phoenix told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Friday morning.
After the storm clears, triple-digit temperatures are likely to return later this week.
