Several individuals have reported receiving calls from a man claiming to be a sergeant or deputy with the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office. The scammer tells the recipient that they have missed jury duty and now have warrants for their arrest. To clear these false warrants, the caller demands payments ranging from $4,000 to $5,000.
The St. Louis County Police Department notes that these fraudulent calls are being made from the number 314-500-8340. However, authorities caution that scammers can easily change the phone number to make it appear as though the call is coming from a local number.
The police department stresses that this is a common scam and reassures residents that they would never contact them in this way or demand money. Citizens who receive such calls are advised to block the number and report the incident to the police.
