Tennessee law reveals 3,854 charges against unlawful residents, including DUI and homicide

A recent report from Tennessee sheds light on the number of individuals who were charged with a crime in the state over the past three months, highlighting their status as undocumented immigrants, as mandated by the law.

The law in Tennessee mandates that law enforcement agencies in all 95 counties must report any criminal charges or convictions involving individuals who are not lawfully present.

On Friday, the report was released by Tennessee’s attorney general.

Here are some of the key takeaways from the report:

    • About 2,719 reports were submitted by 73 of the state’s 95 counties between October and December 2024.
    • About 92 unique countries of origin were reported
    • Of the 3,854 charges listed, 447 were violent offenses
    • 11 of these offenses reported were homicides

According to the report, a significant number of individuals who were arrested had multiple charges against them.

    • Bledsoe County: Did not report to the state
    • Bradley County: 20
    • Grundy County: 1
    • Hamilton County: 114
    • Marion County: 11
    • McMinn County: 2
    • Meigs County: 1
    • Polk County: 1
    • Rhea County: 23
    • Sequatchie County: 3

These are the top 10 offenses that have been reported:

    • DUI: 654
    • Driving without a license: 549
    • Traffic violation: 533
    • Driving on a S/C/R license: 243
    • Domestic assault: 154
    • Public intoxication: 147
    • Failure to appear in court: 150
    • Probation violation: 91
    • Open container law violation: 83
    • Aggravated assault: 80

According to the report, there are 136 open cases, 128 cases that ended in a guilty conviction, and 85 cases that were dismissed.

The reports showed that Mexico had the highest number of cases, followed by Guatemala, Honduras, and Venezuela.
