A sad tale from Upstate New York: State Police have arrested two adults suspected of teaching and then witnessing four juveniles physically assault an adult with developmental problems.

According to the New York State Police, Nellie McCaul, 43, of Copake Falls, and Brandy Shook, 36, of Hudson, were arrested last week for Endangering the Welfare of an Incompetent or Physically Disabled Person, as well as four charges of Endangering the Welfare of a Child.

According to the New York State Police, the investigation began during the summer in response to charges that the adults were involved in the physical assault of a disabled adult, whom they witnessed being beaten up by four children.

On July 5th, according to police, “Shook and McCaul instructed and watched four juveniles physically assault an adult victim with developmental disabilities.”

Previous Child Abuse Allegations

Nellie McCaul has been charged with child abuse on previous occasions.

According to a News 10 ABC story from June 2021, Copake residents Duane McCaul, 38, and Nellie McCaul, 39, were arrested on various offenses related to a child abuse investigation.

The 2021 report claims that the “McCauls had tied an 8-year-old youngster to a bed frame multiple times. Additionally, authorities suspect them of committing various forms of child abuse.

According to the NYSP report, Shook and McCaul were charged in City of Hudson Court on March 4, 2025, and will appear again in Copake Town Court on March 24, 2025.
