A High Wind Warning has been issued for areas of southern New Mexico and western Texas, anticipating hazardous gusts of up to 75 mph. The warning will be active from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. MDT on Tuesday, March 18.

According to the National Weather Service in El Paso, strong west winds ranging from 40 to 50 mph with gusts up to 75 mph are expected to affect the Sacramento Mountains, Gila Region Highlands, and several counties in southern New Mexico and western Texas. Areas at lower elevations, such as Las Cruces, Alamogordo, and El Paso, may experience sustained winds between 35 and 45 mph, with gusts reaching 60 to 70 mph.

The strong winds present a significant danger, as they could lead to widespread power outages, falling debris, and travel disruptions. High-profile vehicles like semi-trucks and RVs need to be extremely cautious when driving on highways. The widespread blowing dust will decrease visibility, creating hazardous travel conditions throughout the area.

Authorities are also cautioning about critical wildfire conditions, as strong winds and dry weather may contribute to the rapid spread of fires. Residents are advised to secure any loose outdoor items, minimize nonessential travel, and stay indoors when winds are at their strongest.

Stay informed by keeping an eye on alerts from the National Weather Service and your local emergency management agencies for the most up-to-date information.
