East Tennessee Snowfall: Higher Elevations Might Get Up To 3 Inches By Friday Morning

Light snow and strong winds are forecast in higher altitudes in East Tennessee late Thursday afternoon and overnight, potentially affecting travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Morristown, wrap-around moisture combined with cold air advection will cause a change from rain to snow showers. Light snow accumulations are forecast, with most regions receiving a dusting to one inch. However, regions above 3,000 feet (0.91 km) may receive between 2 and 3 inches (ca. 8 cm) of snowfall.

In addition to snowfall, northwest winds are expected to gust between 30 and 40 mph (ca. 64 km/h), resulting in potentially hazardous circumstances. The combination of slick roads and strong gusts could make travel difficult, particularly during the Thursday evening commute.

We encourage motorists to exercise caution, slow down, and remain vigilant for any icy areas on the road. Those traveling at higher elevations should be prepared for rapid weather changes.

To get real-time road conditions, call 511 or check local transportation updates.

This winter weather phenomenon mostly impacts Johnson, Unicoi, Southeast Greene, Southeast Carter, and Southeast Monroe counties, which include the cities of Mountain City, Erwin, Hampton, and Coker Creek. Residents in these locations should stay informed and take appropriate precautions if snow and high winds begin later today.
