In a recent interview with Eyewitness News, a woman from Evansville shared her experience of being arrested on charges of neglect. The authorities claimed that she failed to take her one-month-old child to the hospital for the treatment of second-degree burns.
Police records indicate that Mary Neighbors, 23, left her son, Cameron Neighbors, with a relative on June 7 to go camping in Boonville for the weekend. Upon returning, Mary picked up Cameron on June 9. However, on June 10, she messaged the relative who had been looking after him to inquire about a mark on his elbow.
According to reports from neighbors, DCS was informed that Neighbors had taken the victim to see a doctor on June 11. However, upon contacting the doctor’s office directly, DCS found out that this was not true. When questioned about her failure to report the injury to DCS, Neighbors told the police that she was afraid they would take the victim away from her.
Neighbors faced charges of neglecting a dependent and was granted release upon posting a $500 bond.
Following her release, Neighbors and her family spoke with Eyewitness News to discuss the events that unfolded.
Neighbors has confessed to lying to DCS regarding the doctor’s appointment out of fear that Cameron would be taken away from her. She maintains that she would never cause any harm to her child.
