Former President Donald Trump’s potential running mate from Ohio, JD Vance, has faced a less than ideal national introduction.
Less than two years after being elected to office, Vance, the author of the widely popular memoir “Hillbilly Elegy,” has become a potential future face of the Republican Party. His Midwestern roots and appeal to numerous MAGA supporters have made him a favorite among many Republicans.
According to a recent CNN analysis, Vance’s popularity as a non-incumbent vice-presidential nominee has been the lowest in at least 44 years. Adding to that, the network has also disclosed that the GOP representative has a substantial unfavorable rating among voters all over the Midwest.
As per CNN’s report, Vance’s favorability rating was 28%, whereas his unfavorability rating was 44% among voters surveyed in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin in July. This indicates a minus 16-point favorability rating for Vance.
According to sources, Republicans are counting on Vance to give the party a much-needed boost in the Midwest. However, his current standing is not strong enough to win over swing voters in crucial states such as Michigan and Wisconsin.
Last week, Harry Enten, the CNN data reporter, highlighted data that revealed Vance had a negative favorability rating of minus 5 points following the Republican National Convention held in Milwaukee.
According to his statement to Erin Burnett on the network, “Even the region and people who know him best, like him even less than how America perceives him.”
Although Vance is relatively new to politics, the Trump campaign requires him to make a significant impact at this moment.
During his 2022 Senate race, Vance significantly underperformed compared to other statewide Republicans on the ballot, even in GOP-leaning Ohio.
In that year, despite Republican Gov. Mike DeWine’s landslide victory, Vance’s win over his opponent, former Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan, was a narrow one with only a 6 percentage point lead.
Republicans have faced criticism from Democrats for their selection of Vance, as they believe his stance on topics like abortion could push away female voters. Despite this, Trump has remained supportive of his choice for vice president.
