An extreme cold warning is in force for West Tennessee, North Mississippi, and Eastern Arkansas, with dangerously low wind chills predicted overnight. A cold weather advisory will be issued Thursday night into Friday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, wind chills could be as low as 6 degrees below zero overnight, with temperatures dropping to 2 degrees above zero by Friday morning. The warning is in effect from 9 p.m. Wednesday to 10 a.m. Thursday, with an advisory extending from midnight Thursday to noon Friday.

Major cities affected include Memphis, Jackson, Oxford, Clarksdale, Tupelo, and Corinth. Residents are advised to take precautions against hypothermia and frostbite, which can develop in minutes under these conditions.

Safety Tips:

  •  When going outside, dress in layers and wear a hat, gloves, and facial protection.
  •  Limit outdoor activities and keep an eye on vulnerable people, such as the elderly and pets.
  • Use caution with heating sources to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.

Cold temperatures can have an impact on road conditions and vehicle performance, so travelers should exercise caution. Follow the National Weather Service and local officials for the latest developments.
